Isabel Alvarez Nazario’s Turbulent Waters stands as a symbolic reverie, bravely reexamining past struggles, perils, and turmoil, which she, as an intrepid and gifted Latina artist, triumphantly persevered.  

Nazario served as a curator of education at the Museo del Barrio of Contemporary Art in New York City and director of the Community Art Gallery at the Queens Museum in New York.  Following her experience in the museum field she was appointed program associate in the International Program at the Ford Foundation.  Then in 1984 she was appointed an associate in the Museum Program at the New York State Council of the Arts.  Isabel has been on the advisory panels at the National Endowment of the Arts and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

Isabel came to Rutgers from New York City in 1992 when she was appointed by the Rutgers Provost as the founding director of The Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC). Currently, Isabel is Associate Vice President reporting to the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. Previously, she was the first Latina at Rutgers to be appointed as Associate Vice President for Academic and Public Partnerships in the Arts and Humanities from 2004–2013; In 1992–2004 she was the director of the Center for Latino Arts and Culture on the New Brunswick Campus; and from 2002–2004 she was appointed as the Executive Director of the Office for Intercultural Initiatives at Rutgers.  For more information visit:
