Jimmy Peña

Esfuerzo 2004, Print, 24" x 55" (Collection of artist).

Jimmy Peña is a highly skilled, self-taught artist. Heavily influenced by current political and social issues, Peña employs a super-realistic style with surreal overtones in his work. He has painted public murals in Junction City, Kansas; Corpus Christi, Texas, and Gunnsburg, Germany. In the last ten years, Peña has concentrated his efforts on creating masterful charcoal drawings upon wood panels in which figures emerge from the wood-grain surfaces.

Peña has exhibited his work throughout the United States. In 2009, he was featured in Texas Draws, a group exhibition at Southwest School of Art & Craft, San Antonio, Texas. Recent solo exhibitions were held at Red Bud Gallery, Houston, TX; Weil Gallery, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Peña's work was highlighted in the book Triumph of Our Communities: Four Decades of Mexican American Art published by Bilingual Review Press. Peña lives in Corpus Christi, Texas with his wife Linda and two dogs.
